Here in the Niagara region we have one of the most beautiful area's for growing grapes. It is not although without it's trials, every year is a new year with new challenges for the grower's to protect their vineyards. Spring, summer, fall and winter bring many challenges, such as spring frost, in which we must use wind machines or helicopters to fly over the vineyards to raise the temperature, a costly thing to do but it works and it is actually amazing to see how they fly the helicopter's over the vineyards very low and precisely at the exact light of inversion to bring down the warmer air and heat up the temperature by quite a few degrees. summer weather is also a challenge from rain storms to dry spells when irrigation is needed, to cool day where we do not reach our need sun time for our grapes to ripen. To the fall when excitement and hecticness and of course stress of lets get going on the harvest the grapes are ready or to ripe or not ripe enough , Oh the thought of having to thin them out to help them to mature and be ready for harvest.. and yet we go on to continue into ice wine season the sweet nectar of the God's not without it's challenges to keep the birds away and to wait patiently for the temperature to drop to -8 to -10 degrees till they are completely frozen. time is of the essence cold and chilly and yet we have to press them frozen, what a beautiful sight to see as it's being pressed like a pancake and then all of a sudden it come running out so little but so valuable. Ice Wine..
How amazing the cycle is as we the growers depend so much on the weather to bring in a crop of such quality , the pride, passion and determination . As you watch those vines grow and take a simple stroll through the vineyard a sense of joy, peace, and romance begins to occur as you hear the flutter of the leave wailing in the vineyard as the wind passes through toasting and reminiscing with a glass of wine. Lush and green by July and through to harvest, anticipation of what will be created by the next step with the Wine Maker.
Ah it is time like a first crush it all begins again in the hands of the Winemaker. Passion again is what creates a beautiful wine. It is an art, a dedication and a challenge for the winemaker to produce such a wine. Each winemaker in our area is unique. Just by knowing and tasting the wines that are being made in our area we have in a very short time become a world class wine producing country.
